SURVIVING EXTREMES  In Conversation with Ben Saunders & Dr Nathan Smith

Joining us during Mental Health Awareness Week is Ben Saunders, one of the world's leading polar explorers, and Dr Nathan Smith, Founder of Extremis, an organisation that specialises in supporting people living and working in challenging and demanding environments, as they discuss the impact of extreme environments and expeditions on psychology and mental health.

Ben Saunders is a record-breaking long-distance skier who has covered more than 7,000km on foot in the Polar Regions since 2001. His accomplishments include skiing solo to both the North and South poles, and leading The Scott Expedition, the longest human-powered polar journey in history – the first completion of the expedition that defeated Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton – a 105-day round-trip from Ross Island on the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again.

Ben will discuss not only the psychical and mental challenges of pursuing demanding goals in harsh environments, but also the internal hurdles he has had to overcome. His story is as much about overcoming fear, self-doubt and the gulf that can follow high level achievement as it is about surviving some of the most dangerous conditions on earth.
